Tasting notes
The 2016 Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese "Rotlay" offers a deep, ripe and concentrated bouquet. Made from partly botrytized grapes, this is a fruit-intense, sweet but stunningly fine and balanced Riesling Auslese with a piquant finish. It is lush and intensely fruity in the aftertaste but also piquant and fine. Highly promising.

Site-typical scents of pear and apple jellies laced with vanilla lead into a silky, delicate yet glycerol-rich palate suggestive of spiced apple cake slathered in vanilla cream. The lusciously lingering, seductively soothing finish introduces juicy but almost overripe muskmelon, yet proves surprisingly transparent to mossy, wet stone nuances. I have the impression – which Sebastian Selbach has confirmed – of slightly less heterogeneous and in aggregate more advanced ripeness here than in the corresponding Schmitt harvest. But the outcome is utterly irresistible.
