Germany

The vine has long found a home on the steep slopes that line the Rhine and Mosel rivers. Here, the Riesling grape thrives – producing wines of searing acidity and great age-worthiness, sometimes with a judicious dose of residual sugar. Explore the best wines and spirits from the country below.

About the wines of Germany

For two millennia, the Germans have been making wine along the steep banks of its meandering rivers, including the Rhine and the Mosel. The majority of the country’s vineyards are located in the southwest corner of the country, close to the border with France and Luxembourg, and its important geographical position means these winelands have witnessed the coming and going of armies throughout the centuries, often to its detriment.

Beyond wine, there are some excellent spirits produced in Germany. Fine eaux de vie are probably the most well-know exports – but there are plenty of other fruit-based spirits, vodkas and gins that hail from small- to mid-sized producers across the length and breadth of the country.
