Tasting notes
A mix of rubbed sage, rosemary, and mint gives way to wild strawberries as the 2021 Grenache Ripper opens in the glass. This is soothingly round and pliant with masses of ripe red and blue fruits that ride a creamy textural wave, all guided by tantalizing acidity. It tapers off with a gentle grip of tannins, violet inner florals and a resonance of licorice that lingers on and on. This refined and verging-on-savory Grenache will win a lot of hearts.

The 2021 Ripper Extended was matured for 22 months in 30% new French oak. It gains in aromatic intensity as it spends time in the glass, offering maraschino cherry, blueberry, licorice, violet, bergamot and sage. The palate is elegantly styled, its concentrated, detailed fruit supported by powdery tannins and mouthwatering acidity that highlights a flourish of spicy accents on the long finish. 350 cases were made.
100% Grenache. Aged 18 months in 30% new 500-litre French oak. RS 0.71 g/l. 700 cases produced. Organic. Tasted blind. Deep purple. Crushed rock, black cherries, violets and wild sagebrush – the type that's more citrusy than herbal – alongside blueberries and blue damson plum. Oomph and stuffing to the palate. High, ripe tannin and well-balanced acid with a rich sweetness to the fruit. Cedary oak on the finish. This needs a few years of age but shows heaps of promise. (SCJ)
The 2021 Ripper is all destemmed Grenache that's fermented in concrete and stainless and aged in mostly neutral oak. It's a pretty, perfumed, elegant, and medium-bodied effort revealing beautiful red and subtle blue fruits supported by plenty of pepper, fresh cut flowers, and spicy, chalky mineral notes. It's an elegant, perfumed, seductive wine in the lineup.
