If you can’t afford high-end Gevrey-Chambertin, this is a good, moderately priced solution with plenty of black fruit and some vanilla. The tannins are ripe enough to provide nice warmth, without making it hard. Quite long, moderately dry finish. Try in 2020.

The 2017 Fixin Clos de la Perrière 1er Cru has a tightly wound, quite focused bouquet combining red and black fruit with pressed iris and a light fish oil tincture. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin. This is very linear in style and just a tad pinched on the finish at the moment. Hopefully it will gain more personality once bottled.

Aromas of plums, spices, sweet soil and potpourri introduce the 2017 Fixin 1er Cru Clos de la Perrière, medium in body, a satiny wine with juicy acids, a sweet core of fruit and creditable length on the finish.

35% whole-bunch fermented. Aged in oak barrels (35% new) for 16 months. Cask sample. Roasted-coffee aromas – surely from oak toast? Lovely juicy red fruit matches it well on the palate, and there’s mouthwatering, moreish structure driven by bright acid and fine tannins. Moderate length with a touch of violet scent. (RH)
