Tasting notes
The 2016 Vosne-Romanée En Orveaux 1er Cru has a seductive, very floral nose with iris and peony suffusing the pretty black cherry and red plum fruit, hints of pain d’épices surfacing with time. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, lightly spiced and quite minty towards what feels like an assertive finish. Very classy, yet it is only just beginning to unfurl.

The 2016 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru En Orveaux, matured in 60% new oak, has a gorgeous bouquet of vibrant maraschino cherry, crushed strawberry, wet limestone and light violets scents that unfold nicely in the glass. The palate is very clean and precise, smooth in texture, but the core of this wine is the inner sphere of sorbet freshness that counters the quite correct structure on the finish that is almost Morey-Saint-Denis in style. This could be the “dark horse” from Cathiard this year? It is equal to the Aux Reignots for sure.
50% new oak. 59-year-old vines. Deep crimson with dark-fruit scent. Juicy and less dense than the Reignots. Still that serious dark character but a little more fluid. Still chewy but lots of life and freshness. Good length. (JH)
