The 2011 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru from Bruno Clair has a splendid bouquet that appears to be evolving with style: wonderful delineation, seamlessly integrated oak and commendable fruit intensity. This just unfolds with panache. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannin, crisp acidity, sensual and pure with a precise, caressing finish brimming over with tart red cherries and strawberry, the essence of Pinoté! Superb. Tasted at Flint Wines Burgundy 2011 tasting.

Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. The Gevrey-Chambertin Clos St Jacques 2011 has plenty of fruit concentration on the nose with raspberry, fresh strawberry, sous-bois and woodland scents springing forth. The palate is medium-bodied with fleshy ripe tannins that lend its silky texture; good depth of fruit although missing a little delineation on the finish. Still, this has good potential and fine salinity on the finish. This is the most sensual of the Clos Saint Jacques 2011s.

Medium red. A real essence of Burgundy on the nose, combining musky red berries, dried flowers and underbrush. Silky and perfumed, with a lovely light touch and subtle intensity to the berry, cherry and violet flavors. This wonderfully pure, understated wine saturates the palate and glistens on the very long, scented finish, which is accented by a peppery nuance. Will this close up in bottle?

So much more drive and energy than the Cazetiers! Really racy and well worth the premium. If you decide to spend hundreds of pounds on a Gevrey premier cru of course… Good stuff. I actually swallowed it – unusually! (JR)
