Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. There is something languid about the nose of Bichot’s outstanding Clos de la Roche Grand Cru ‘11. It does not have the best tension in the peer group tasting of grand cru, yet there is purity and personality: autumn leaves, undergrowth, woodland scents intermixed with briary and red cherries. The palate is medium-bodied with filigree tannins. The acidity is nicely judged and the oak neatly interwoven leaving the finish very harmonious and svelte. This is a class act from a grower that deserves much more respect from cognoscenti.

Notes of spice, red currant, violets, warm earth and a hint of animale are trimmed in background wood nuances. There is excellent volume to the impressively scaled, rich and voluminous flavors that possess a seductive mouth feel before terminating in a moderately austere but strikingly long finish that also displays just a touch of dryness. While the dryness may simply be from the recent bottling, it's not clear that it will dissipate with time in bottle. Tasted: Jan 15, 2014. Drink: 2019+

Although the Bichot family settled in the region in 1350, Albert Bichot was founded in 1831 by Bernard Bichot. Today the producer is one of Burgundy’s most respected, making wines from both its own vineyards and with purchased fruit.
