Our second flight takes us into the early days at the estate. Even after all these years, the 1977 Brunello di Montalcino, Soldera’s first Brunello, remains a magical wine. Elegant and nuanced, the 1977 is quite delicate in the glass. Then again, it is approaching its 50th birthday. Sweet red cherry, tobacco, cedar and white pepper are all beautifully delineated. Time brings out compelling inner perfume and tons of nuance. What a privilege it is to taste this from a perfect bottle.

Although fully mature, the 1977 Brunello di Montalcino had great purity of fruit and a Burgundian delicacy to it, until the savory Sangiovese notes and a trademark acidity kicked in. What a gorgeous wine.
Soldera's first Brunello, the 1977 Brunello di Montalcino is still in fine shape. It opens with promising, ethereal aromas of worn-in leather, spices and dark fruits, but ultimately comes across as less exciting on the palate.

About the producer
Soldera is one of the most highly rated, fiercely collected wines of Italy. The winery is based in the Brunello di Montalcino, however the estate is no longer labelled as a Brunello, following a fall out with the consortium. Made from 100% Sangiovese, the wine is currently bottled as a Toscana IGT.
