Tasting notes
The Capanna 2017 Brunello di Montalcino Nicco (with 3,016 bottles and 264 magnums released) offers tertiary definition and lots of dried fruit with blackcurrant and baked plum. There is very little primary fruit left here, unsurprisingly, considering the scorching hot and dry conditions in this growing season. I get dried oak, cola, medical herb, grilled rosemary and tarry smoke. Again, the 15% alcohol content is too strong for a nuanced grape like Sangiovese. The tannins are also on the astringent side.

Lustrous ruby. Deep nose yet still a little embryonic. Brooding richness, but much more contained on the palate. Juicy cherry and concentrated raspberry with real depth and with a layer of firm but finely ground tannins. Gorgeous elegance for this torrid year. Gripping and long. (WS)
