The broadest-shouldered wine in the cellar is the 2022 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru Vieilles Vignes, a full-bodied, ample and velvety wine redolent of dark berries, cherries, licorice and spices. Layered and concentrated, with lively acids and a saline finish, it shows promise.

The 2022 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru contains vines planted as far back as 1927 (it was hitherto labeled as Vieilles Vignes) and sees around 80% new oak. This well-defined bouquet offers brambly red fruit, wild mint, and limestone touches. There’s good vigor here, and it feels more assimilated with the new oak than some of the Gevrey from Rebourseau. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins that seem finely knit. Mainly red fruit, quite precise with a touch of piquancy on the finish - this shouldn't need too long in bottle, yet has the substance to repay bottle age. This is worth keeping an eye on.
About the producer
Based in Gevrey-Chambertin, this domaine has a long history and impressive vineyards (with over five hectares of Grand Cru), but has long been considered an under-performer. Today, however, the Bouygues brothers (of Montrose and Clos Rougeard) have taken ownership and change is afoot.
