Tasting notes
The 2024 Clos Saint-Denis from Domaine des Chézeaux is a wine of rare significance and quiet drama. Produced from just one barrel, it marks the final vintage from 110-year-old vines, which Charles replanted entirely after the harvest, having reached the point where they could no longer yield wine. As a result, there will be no Clos Saint-Denis from the domaine for at least five years, and potentially seven, making this cuvée a true farewell. The wine is immediately elegant and mineral, combining depth with a striking sense of vitality. Aromatically, it unfolds with layered notes of dark cherry, spice, crushed stone and wild undergrowth, all woven together with seductive harmony. On the palate, it is vibrant and deep, its intensity tempered by remarkable finesse. The fine-grained tannins are polished and precise, supporting a core of beautifully ripe fruit without any heaviness. There is an undeniable sexy allure to this Clos Saint-Denis, carried by its seamless texture and extraordinary persistence. The finish is long and resonant, echoing mineral tension, dark fruit and subtle spice long after the wine has left the palate. A poignant and unforgettable Clos Saint-Denis, bowing out with grace, authority and emotion.

The 2024 Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru is a vineyard that was completely replanted after the picking as 80% of the vines were missing. It has an exquisite bouquet with vivacious redcurrant and raspberry fruit, rose petal and crushed stone. The palate is very precise and tensile, very poised and silky with marvellous transparency and refinement on the finish. I am absolutely smitten by this shame there is just one barrel.

About the producer

This Gevrey-Chambertin property was founded in 1982 but the vines were leased to other producers. As of 2021, that’s all changed, with Domaine Hudelot-Noëllat’s Charles van Canneyt and his wife Anne-Sophie having purchased the property. This is undoubtedly an address to watch.
