The 2017 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru offers much darker fruit than Rousseau's Charmes-Chambertin and feels more modern in style, though the accentuated new oak feels in sync with the fruit profile. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly tough tannins. There is quite a bit of extraction here, so there is plenty of substance, though the grippy finish misses the elegance of the best in this flight. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting.

The premium probably isn’t worth it but this is an honest rendition, with a certain amount of concentration but a lightly bitter note on the finish. (JR)
