The 2002 Morey-Saint-Denis Vieilles Vignes 1er Cru acquits itself well, one of Hubert and Laurent Ligniers perhaps under-valued gems. This has a rustic but inviting bouquet with pretty, tertiary red fruit that might have just dispensed with a bit of vigor in recent months. The palate is fully mature with slightly coarse tannins on the entry, but plenty of pretty red fruit is mixed with tobacco and smoky notes on the finish. Drink soon, though. Tasted at Très Girard.

The 2002 Morey-Saint-Denis Vieilles Vignes 1er Cru, which was made by the late Romain Lignier, has a gorgeous dark cherry, incense and violet scented bouquet that is bursting with vigour. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, very harmonious in texture with an almost pastille-like purity. Maybe it just lacks the complexity that I believe Laurent Lignier imparts into this cuvée nowadays, but it is still very attractive. Tasted at Sarah Marsh MW’s 2002 Red Burgundy tasting.

Much deeper garnet than most. Good combination of concentration and charm. The fruit is probably at the end of its tether but for the moment it's a lovely caressing wine with lots of ripeness and sweetness. Sufficient freshness and a little bit of tamarind on the end. Altogether a pleasing whole. (JR)

Red-ruby. Sweet aromas of red fruits, coffee, mocha and underbrush; the most complex of these 2002s to this point. Then fat, rich and sweet, with complex, deep flavors of red fruits and minerals. Quite full and impressively long, finishing with sweet, fine tannins. A classic example of Morey-Saint-Denis.
