Score 90/100 · Drink 2017-2023, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate, Feb 2014

Tommaso Cortonesi’s 2009 Brunello di Montalcino puts on a very interesting aromatic display with deeply floral tones of crushed rose and violets followed by dark fruit, plum and oak spice. There’s a pretty savory interlude as well with stretches of cured meat and saddle leather that give the wine a masculine, true Brunello quality. This wine only ages in botte: 36 months in Slavonian oak. All over, it shows good balance with medium intensity and a thin lining of acidity. Drink: 2017-2023. Mature-looking mid ruby with orange rim. Dusty oak on the nose. Nutmeg and just a hint of leather. Not a lot of fruit at the moment on the palate and with rather drying tannins on the finish. Tough. (WS)
