This auctioned bottling represents primarily the first juices to run from the pressing of what would become the Kupp Grosses Gewächs. Behind a slight matchstick stink emerge scents of extremely ripe white peach, mango and mirabelle. The succulent impression on a glycerol-slicked palate is correspondingly fruity. The finish then shocks with its penetrating, vibratory intensity of fresh fruit acidity and limey citricity allied to crystalline mineral impingements. This needs time for the nose to clear but is already promising future excitement.

So much roasted-apple and cinnamon character here, as well as apricot tart and apple strudel; this is an aromatic but very focused wine. There’s fabulous texture and mouth feel on the full-bodied palate, which weaves luscious strands of fruit together with the ease of an acrobat swinging on a trapeze — such is the intensity and piercing quality of the acidity. Drink now.

From the Grosses Gewächs plot and based on the free-run must of the GG, the 2018 Kupp Spätlese Fass 23 (Versteigerung) is, so to say, the aperitif of the GG. It opens with a super clear and precise, bright and flinty-scented bouquet. Salty-piquant and tightly woven, this is a lush and precise, piquant and salty Spätlese with remarkable finesse and sharp but ripe acidity. Very stimulating and straightforward like an Eiswein yet much brighter and, of course, not as sweet and concentrated. Tasted in June 2019 from a bottle that was opened five or six weeks prior.
