Tasting notes
Full screwcapped bottle just 1,198 g. Greenish pale gold. High toned and already quite evolved on the nose with the mature Riesling and distinctly ‘mineral’ flavours also seeming to be blended with the traces of spontaneous fermentation! Pungent in the extreme. Just the job for a Riesling lover like me and admirably long. I’d guess this isn’t bone dry but it’s a delicious drink for now and will be taken to The Fat Badger tonight as my contribution to dinner. Willie Lebus to bring the red. (JR)

The 2020 Kirchberg GG is fascinating, pure and precise in the 2020 HL context and delivers perfect fruit ripeness to the nose that intertwines fine slate aromas. Silky, crystalline and very fine on the palate, this is a full-bodied, intense, complex and persistently salty Kirchberg that is one of the winners of the effortful 2020 vintage. Tasted in Wiesbaden in August 2021.
'Feral saxophones improvise to iodine and saline herbality' according to the producer's description. On steep slopes of Devonian red slate and quarzite. Fiercely mineral and citrus nose with tight fruit and stoniness on the palate. This really grabs the attention of the taster with its sleek texture, impressive persistence and confident undertow. The light-footed way this skips and jumps over your palate is deceptive, for it has a serious structure packed into its sleek frame. Freshly opened, the intense wet-stone character is the most impressive thing about this wine, but with some aeration it gains a ton of herbal intensity and a touch of green chili at the long, clean finish. From organically grown grapes with Fair\'n Green certification. Drink or hold. Screw cap.
