Tasting notes
The 2017 Riesling GG Kallstadter Saumagen is clear, precise and flinty on the deep, intense and concentrated, terroir-driven nose. Creamy and intense on the rich and elegant palate, this is an impressive, silky-textured, very precise yet still very young Saumagen with fine tannin grip and lots of lime juice flavors. Great aging potential. Tasted in March 2020.

Saumagen is not just the appellation of a vineyard in the Palatinate; it is also the name of a very traditional dish of the region (something to do with a pig's stomach). In a very logical way both suit each other very well, particularly when the hefty sausage meat is accompanied by a Riesling as generous as Rings' Saumagen. Its heady fragrance of pears and vineyard peaches is followed by an equally rich and juicy flavour of all the fruit the local orchards can muster. This is not to be sipped; but drunk in big mouthfuls. Call it simplistic and you have missed the stony and earthy minerality. (MS)
