There are roughly 500 cases of the 2013 Mayote, and since they only have 2.5 acres of Syrah planted, the volume is relatively fixed. Made from 44% Syrah, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon and 16% Petit Verdot that was raised in 100% new oak, it's a serious, structured wine that has plenty of blackberry, smoked meats and peppery herbs as well as full-bodied richness, a great mid-palate and plenty of length. Give bottles a year or two and enjoy over the following decade.

Glass-staining ruby. A heady, smoke-tinged bouquet displays scents of ripe blue fruits, cola and vanilla, and a pipe tobacco note gains power as the wine opens in the glass. Fleshy and broad but energetic on the palate, offering sweet, deeply concentrated black currant and blueberry liqueur flavors and a suggestion of candied licorice. Closes smooth and spicy, showing slow-building tannins and impressive, dark-fruit-dominated persistence.

Bright purple. Expressive cherry and dark berry aromas pick up suggestions of woodsmoke, vanilla and incense with air. Spicy, concentrated and broad on the palate, offering sweet blackberry and cherry-vanilla flavors enlivened by juicy acidity. Closes smooth, sweet and very long, with supple tannins building slowly and folding into the wine's intense, oak-spiced (100% new barrels, in fact) fruit.

Daou's 2013 Mayote is shaping up to be a real beauty. An exotic melange of blue and black stone fruits, graphite, smoke and dark spices literally explode from the glass in a vibrant, energetic wine that captures the energy of this highly promising vintage. The 2013 boasts massive fruit and pure density, but at the same time possesses plenty of minerality to balance things out. Mayote is a Syrah/Cabernet Sauvignon/Petit Verdot blend.
