Tasting notes
Coming from this famed rocky, red-soiled vineyard up on Pritchard Hill, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Houyi Vineyard was aged for 19 months in French oak barrels, 100% new. Deep garnet-purple colored, it comes bounding out of the glass with exuberant scents of fresh blueberries, black raspberries and warm black cherries followed by hints of cassis, wild sage and underbrush. Full-bodied, it has a firm, grainy texture supporting the muscular black fruit flavors with lots of red fruit sparks and mineral accents coming through on the persistent finish. 213 cases were made.

Coming from a site previously known as 9 Suns, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Houyi Vineyard is a full-bodied, nicely concentrated Cabernet with a terrific sense of minerality in its darker currant and cassis fruits as well as notes of chocolate, violets, and tobacco leaf. It’s rich, expansive, and seamless on the palate, and will benefit from short-term cellaring.
The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Houyi Vineyard is going to need time in bottle, as the tannins are searing today. With a bit of coaxing, the personality of this site starts to emerge. Savory, floral and intensely mineral, the Houyi has so much to offer. Blackberry jam, spice, licorice and menthol build in a vibrant mountain Cabernet loaded with personality.
The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Houyi Vineyard is powerful and explosive in the glass. Inky dark blue and purplish fruit, gravel, smoke, licorice, cloves, menthol and spice come together in a rich, dense Cabernet loaded with character. This site next to Colgin and Brand has tons of potential.
