Tasting notes
A Petite Sirah-driven release that includes 10% Grenache, 7% Mourvèdre, 6% Syrah, and the rest Viognier, the 2021 Ingenuity offers loads of jammy red and blue fruits as well as some classy notes of graphite, woodsmoke, and peppery herbs. It's a big, rich, opulent red that has the purity of fruit and the balance that are present in all of these latest releases from Epoch.

The 2021 Ingenuity is remarkably pretty. It opens with a spice box bouquet of dried roses, cedar shavings and cloves lifted by hints of dusty sage. This leads with a tinge of sour citrus while enveloping the palate with rich red and black fruits, which take on an almost tarry concentration toward the close. Tannic and rich yet beautifully balanced, the 2021 finishes with amazing length, ending with a bitter chocolate note.
The 2021 Ingenuity comes mostly from the Paderewski Vineyard, with just 6% from York Mountain Vineyard. It is a blend of 74% Petite Sirah, 10% Grenache, 7% Mourvèdre, 6% Syrah and 3% Viognier matured for 18 months in 35% new French oak barrels and puncheons. It's broody and deep on the nose, with aromas of cassis, blueberry pie, warm chocolate, violet and sagebrush. The palate is hedonistic, balancing highly concentrated, perfumed fruit with loads of velvety tannins, and it has a long, fragrant finish. 526 cases were made, which will be released in the fall of 2024.
