The 2001 E. Guigal Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a completely destemmed blend of 85% Grenache, 5% Syrah, 5% Mourvèdre, and 5% assorted varieties that’s aged for 24 months in old foudres. Showing really well currently, and probably right in the middle of it’s drink window, the wine yields classic Grenache aromas of black cherries, mineral, leather, and earthy complexity on the nose. This is followed by a clean, medium bodied palate that’s balanced, shows good underlying structure, and a fleshy, rich mid-palate.

Deep red. Roasted raspberry, strawberry, pepper, spices and exotic dried herbs on the nose. Suave and lively in the mouth, with red fruit and garrigue flavors framed by ripe acidity. Spicy and perfumed in the mouth, with enticing but restrained sweetness. Finishes very fresh and persistent, with fine-grained tannins. Delicious already.
