Tasting notes
Boasting bold, assertive aromas of red cherries and black tea, plus hints of black olives and mocha, the Cabernet Franc-based 2019 Hexameter—56% Cabernet Franc, 43% Cabernet Sauvignon, 1% Merlot—is medium to full-bodied and rather open-knit in feel. The texture is more coarse velvet than plush, but there's ample complexity and length, plus a decade or more of cellaring potential.

Pure Napa Valley magic as well as a perfect wine, the 2019 Hexameter reveals a deep purple hue along with an incredibly complex bouquet of black raspberries, spring flowers, cassis, vanilla, and tobacco. This carries to a layered, full-bodied red with ultra-fine tannins, perfect balance, a deep, opulent mouthfeel, and an incredible finish. This is one of those wines where nothing is out of place, and while it already delivers pleasure today, it's going to evolve for 20-25 years. The blend is 55% Cabernet Franc, 42% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the balance Merlot and Petit Verdot. Hats off to the team at Ovid for this incredible wine.
The 2019 Hexameter is a powerful, brooding wine that is going to need at least a handful of years to come together. The aromatics, usually so expressive here, are quite hushed. Instead, what stands out is the wine huge core of fruit and structure. The 2019 is quite a bit more reticent than it was from barrel, but Cabernet Franc based wines often shut down hard after bottling. That seems to be the case here. There is certainly a ton to look forward to.
The 2019 Hexameter is unreal. When all is said and done, it might be the single best wine I have tasted from Ovid, and I say that having had the chance to taste most of them. Inky, rich and so expressive, with dizzying intensity, the 2019 melds together the aromatic lift of Franc with voluptuous fruit and silky tannins. All the elements are in the right place. This is truly a remarkable showing for a young wine in barrel. In a word: tremendous.
