Good medium red. Very ripe aromas of red fruits, marzipan, mocha and nuts. Supple, sweet, round and seamless, with open-knit cherry and mocha flavors enlivened by a mineral component. The broad finish features ripe, building tannins and a slight warmth.

Monforte d'Alba. Deep ruby with orange tinges. Leafy, hay and tea nose, closed on fruit. Peppery. Same slowness on the palate. Brooding with sweet, concentrated cherry. Lots of coating tannin. Bit of a lightweight, but may improve. (WS)

Veglio's 2007 Barolo Castelletto presents the most exotic, mysterious bouquet of these wines. Dark cherries, minerals, anise, mint, mocha and graphite emerge from this sensual, textured Barolo. Here it is the essence of Monforte that comes through in spades. In particular, the Castelletto impresses for the way it expresses weight and richness without heaviness. It is a terrific effort.

Anticipated maturity: 2012-2022. This is a promising set of Baroli from Mauro Veglio. Quite uncharacteristically, many of the 2007s shut down quickly in the glass, so where these wines are headed over the near-term is hard to predict. New oak levels are down to roughly 50% for the single-vineyard Baroli, although the Rocche get a slightly higher percentage of new barrels. Importer: T. Edward Wines, Ltd., New York, NY; tel.
