Score 92/100 · Drink 2014-2024, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, May 2011

The 2006 Brunello di Montalcino is a gorgeous, substantial wine laced with black cherries, plums, licorice, menthol, new leather and a streak of French oak. Floral notes appear in the glass, adding freshness, lift and balance to this dark, introspective wine. All of the elements flow together gracefully in this mid-weight, hugely delicious, expansive Brunello. I preferred the straight Brunello to the Lucere on both occasions I tasted the wines.

Concentrated ruby with broad orange-tinged rim. Sweet, open knit, spicy cherry nose. Very appealing and ripe. Palate much tighter with gripping stalky tannin and real bite. Fruit closes up, tannins drying out the finish. Probably needs more time. (WS)
