Score 94/100 · Drink 2016-2036, Robert Parker, Dec 2016

The 2014 La Magdelena (69% Cabernet Franc and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon) has a beautifully sweet, oaky side to the blueberry, forest floor and flowery notes of the Cabernet Franc. The wine is medium to full-bodied, but cuts a gracious, ballerina-like dance across the palate. The finish kicks in with some tannin and earth, but the wine is stylish and exceptionally well-made. Drink it over the next 20 years.

The 2014 La Magdalena is another drop-dead gorgeous beauty from Favia. The aromatics are a bit attenuated relative to how the wine showed last year. Some of that may be attributable to its recent bottling. We will see. For now, the 2014 is fresh and nicely delineated throughout. Red cherry jam, mocha, wild flowers and sweet spices all flesh out in the glass.

The La Magdalena is once again majestic. Vivid, nuanced and remarkably detailed for such a big wine, the 2014 exhibits striking aromatic presence to match its finely sculpted personality. Translucent energy and power abound. La Magdalena is a blend of equal parts Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, co-fermented, from Oakville Ranch.

The 2014 La Magdalena is redolent of black cherry, new leather, licorice and mocha. Deep, dense and plush, the 2014 offers notable textural depth and resonance. It’s a big wine, but all the elements are very nicely balanced. This is the most forward of the 2014s at Favia. It feels a bit riper and a touch more evolved than some of the other wines.
