Tasting notes
Harvested at 89 Oechsle, the 2002 Riesling Kabinett Urziger Wurzgarten could easily have been sold as an Auslese. Its demure aromatics lead to a broad, lush, fat core of white fruits, minerals, and tangy slate. An immensely satisfying, big-hearted Kabinett, it is medium-bodied, packed with fruit, softly-textured, and reveals a long flavorful finish. Projected maturity: now-2010. All of Weingut Joh. Jos. Christoffel Erben’s wines revealed relatively high levels of CO2 (a natural by-product of fermentation that disappears with time). Readers who find this trait unpleasant should wait 1-2 years before opening any of this estate’s 2002s. Delicate scents of fresh strawberry, lemon, honey and vanilla. Bright and tingling in the mouth, with the sensation of fresh strawberries right down to their tiny whiskers. Quite refreshing yet adamantly slatey in the finish. 1 star.
