The 2022 Riesling Dalsheimer Oberer Hubacker GG is very clear and reductive in its dense, aromatic and slightly salty nose, which combines fresh pineapple, delicate citrus fruit and fine herbal aromas. Juicy and intense on the palate yet fine and elegant, with delicate salinity and fine tannin structure as well as good length, this is one of Keller's finest Hubackers of the last 20 years, but it still needs some time to develop. Tasted at the domaine in July this year.

Tank sample. Limestone soils. Apparently the stones used to build the Kellers' home come from this vineyard. Klaus Peter Keller's grandfather sat the Sprengmeisterprüfung (a test that allows you to use explosives) so that he could source the rocks for building. Somehow 'darker' on the nose than the Kirchspiel. More earthy and spiced. Not as flirtatious, with a slight impression of smoky reduction, the herbal fumes of spontaneous fermentation that I did not sense on the Kirchspiel. Powerful, savoury, darker on the palate, too. Really savoury with a strong herbal aftertaste. Power and length but without the charm of Kirchspiel. Darker and more earthy. The same quality level as Kirchspiel but not as much to my personal taste. (JH)
