Medium red. Aromas of plum, mocha, tobacco and underbrush, with a floral element emerging with aeration. Suave and silky, conveying a light touch. Sappy and classically dry, with harmonious acidity. Finishes firmly tannic and persistent. Nicely balanced in the context of the vintage.

The 2003 Brunello di Montalcino is a big, full-bodied wine loaded with dense ripe fruit, spice and scorched earth nuances. It shows outstanding depth on the palate, where the intensity of fruit provides a nice foil to the firmer tannins of the vintage. This attractive Brunello looks to be an excellent candidate for near-term drinking.

In addition to making wines at his estate Col d’Orcia proprietor Count Francesco Marone Cinzano is also the newly appointed President of the Consorzio del Vino Brunello di Montalcino. Cinzano cuts a dashing figure and his diplomatic, aristocratic background seems to be a perfect fit for leading the producers’ consortium through the challenges it faces today.
