The 2021 Beaune Les Grèves 1er Cru comes from century-old vines that Lafarge told me were "in good form", producing just 12hl/ha in this frost-affected vintage. It has a classy bouquet with mineral-driven red fruit, precise with bergamot and tea leaf notes emerging. The palate is fresh on the entry with finer tannins than the Clos des Aigrots, perhaps just missing a bit of substance towards the finish, but there's plenty of transparency and terroir expression in situ.

The Lafarge's old vines celebrated their 100th birthday with style with the 2021 Beaune 1er Cru Les Grèves. Bursting with aromas of sweet red berries, vine smoke, spices and peonies, it's medium to full-bodied, layered and perfumed, with a lively core of fruit framed by supple tannins.
Cask sample. A really crystalline, bright crimson colour. Sweet red berries, red cherries, redcurrants and wild strawberries. Some savoury depth, too. Lovely crisp red fruits. Lots of freshness. Soft, elegant tannins and a long, concentrated finish. Gracefully perfumed with a refined but formidable structure. (MH)
