The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru has an intense nose, leaning slightly more toward black fruit, and is richer and more opulent than its fellow CSJs. Quite dense and tannic, the palate is rich on the entry, with blood orange-infused black fruit and a sweet, solid finish. It still requires 5-7 years in bottle. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.

The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru has a mixture of red and black fruit on the nose, well-defined but backward. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins, quite dense and layered with touches of allspice and pain d'épices, veins of blood orange towards the finish that feels quite long. I suspect this will close down after three or four years as it tends to do, otherwise, cellar it away for a decade.

The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru contains 70% whole bunch and is matured in new oak. It finished its malolactic in August. The very dense, backward nose features black cherries and cassis fruit, then touches of dried pressed violets and incense with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannins on the entry, and quite fresh, leading to a grainy-textured finish. Blue fruit emerges only with air, and there is palpable mineralité on the aftertaste. This is typical of Esmonin’s more fruit-driven style of Clos Saint-Jacques, and it will need several years’ bottle age.
