Score 91/100 · Drink 2015-2024, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, May 2015

A huge, dense wine, the 2004 Barolo Cannubi races across the palate with remarkable depth and intensity. Mocha, espresso and sweet spices add richness to a decidedly dark, powerful Cannubi. The 2004 spent 18 months in French oak barriques (60% new) followed by 12 months is cask. Overall, the 2004 has held up well, even if vineyard signatures aren't the first thing that comes to mind. In 2004, the last fruit came in on October 22, late even by the standard of the year.

Slightly burnt notes and lots of tannin underneath. All structure and slighty cardboardy. (JR)

Deep red. Captivating floral nose dominated by rose petal. Wonderfully silky and juicy in the mouth, with strong acidity and floral perfume giving lift to the middle palate. Finishes with explosive vinosity, expanding floral perfume and very suave tannins. A beauty. Not to beat a dead horse, but these wines could hardly be more different in style than the Einaudi bottlings of just a decade ago, which showed strong material but far more rustic aromas and flavors.

In a bordeaux bottle because it's aged in Bordeaux barrels. Bright red. Light bonfire nose. Very sweet fruit on the front palate – much richer than the botte-aged Grimaldi. And then it tightens up. Very dry finish. But there is lots tucked in here. (JR)
