This is another clear step up in the range from the Forge de Tart, The nose is the most expressive and multilayered – oscillating between bright, fresh, little red berries and richer notes beneath. There are also white floral notes, the whole thing very delicate and pure. On the palate, you can feel the mouthcoating tannins, yet they are light-on-their-feet and airy. There’s beautiful tension and freshness, with sour cherry and a slight bitterness, yet once the wine is gone, you realise the underlying power here: this really an iron fist in a velvet glove. This is very delicate and refined, all dentelle, and finishing super long. It feels more approachable than the 2022, a little like a blend of 2017 and 2021 in its openness, yet density too.

The 2023 Clos de Tart Grand Cru, which contains 50% whole bunch, has an exquisite bouquet that is understated at first, opening with Dorset plum, raspberry, graphite and violets, the latter becoming more prominent with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with finely sculpted tannins. There is pleasing fluidity to this Clos de Tart with a very harmonious satin-textured finish lent edge by assiduous whole bunch addition. What a lovely Grand Cru, one that just needs two or three years in bottle.
A perfectly ripe strawberry is all I can say about the nose, with just a hint of orange peel and perfumes like lavender and violets. Medium-bodied and dense, with ultra-fine, silky tannins. The purity is like waking up on a perfect morning with dew, damp earth and vines. It\'s so long, reserved and precise. Just a hint of flint at the end. Best after 2029.
The 2023 Clos de Tart Grand Cru includes just over 50% whole cluster this year with slightly less new oak (see Producer Commentary). The nose offers a mixture of red and black fruit, briar, bay leaf and hints of cedar. The medium-bodied palate features fine tannins, framing the primarily black fruit laced with graphite and a touch of cracked black pepper. It is quite structured and a little less fleshy than the previous vintage, with impressive length. This will be racked before bottling, which will help it open up and gain a bit of flesh. Interestingly, tasting from a wider, typical Burgundy glass heightened the red fruit on the nose and made the tannins feel more finessed. This wine will inevitably require time in bottle, perhaps six to eight years.
About the producer
Clos de Tart is the largest Grand Cru monopole site in the Côte d’Or. Wine has been produced from this vineyard for over 900 years and it remains one of Burgundy’s top Pinot Noirs.
