The 2023 Chambertin is bold, rich and powerful. The fruit is ripe but maintains surprising freshness alongside its roundness. The tannins are great, supple and fine-grained, relatively full-bodied but the new oak (100% here) is beautifully well-integrated. The finish offers more red fruit, with redcurrant, blueberries and cherries, as well as crushed raspberries. This Grand Cru is delicious and will be fantastic – but give it eight to 10 years in the cellar first. Three barrels produced, aged entirely in new oak.

100% new oak. 20% whole bunch. Cask sample. Lifted and lively on the nose. The whole-bunch portion really does make a difference to the structure. The acidity is much more obvious than on the Clos de Bèze. This tastes a little bit more like an experiment than a wine! Maybe it’s just a question of waiting (even) longer …
About the producer
Nicolas Potel is one of Burgundy’s most talented and connected winemakers. He created Maison Roche de Bellene, the négoce arm of Domaine de Bellene, in 2008, using his extensive network in the region to source top-quality fruit for an "haute couture" négociant operation.
