The 2018 Chambertin Grand Cru has a very well-defined bouquet that is a distant cousin of the Bonnes-Mares stylistically, featuring blackberry and wild hedgerow, crushed limestone and a touch of black tea. The palate is medium-bodied and quite austere for a Chambertin, delivering firm tannins, wonderful structure and light white pepper and sage toward the finish, which has just the right amount of bitterness. Superb.

Five barrels, fruit from Chambertin and Clos de Bèze. Like the Romanée-St-Vivant, they are not selling this (yet) but they may sell it to individuals rather than into the trade. It is part of a share-cropping agreement and the owner of the land, who gets 45% of the crop, sells the wine under their own label. Dark and just a touch stemmy. Much more linear than most of the grands crus. A tight structure with the fruit much more held in. Stony, tight, fresh, dry and almost chalky on the finish. Pure dark-red fruit. Impressive length and finesse but all so tightly wound. (JH)
