The 2018 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru comprises four barrels this year, from 60- to 80-year-old vines in the middle of the vineyard. It includes up to 40% whole bunch. It has a wonderful bouquet of mineral-rich black fruit that turns toward more red fruit with aeration, also developing a light floral note of rose petals with time. The palate is underpinned by fabulous mineralité , as if Arnaud Mortet had just ground some stone in his hand and plopped it into my glass. Quite profound.

A wild and brooding bouquet of dark berries, cinnamon, grilled meats, black chocolate and rich soil tones introduces the 2018 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru, a full-bodied, broad and textural wine that's deep and layered, with powdery tannins and complex carnal nuances to complement its sweet core of fruit, concluding with a sapid finish. Mortet told me that this is one of the higher-pH cuvées in the cellar this year, and I suspect it will drink well comparatively early by the standards of young Mazis-Chambertin.
About the producer
This estate, today with Arnaud Mortet at the helm, makes some of Gevrey-Chambertin’s finest wines. Working with 16 hectares, as well as a few négociant parcels, this property makes perfumed and chiselled Pinot Noir.
