Tasting notes
The 2020 Berncasteler Doctor Riesling Kabinett is still extremely reductive on the nose but clear, precise and elegant, with great slate purity and Kabinett brightness. Lush and piquant on the palate, this is a light and persistently salty, grippy and palate-tickling Kabinett with a stimulating finish. However, the wine needs some years to open up. 8% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted from AP 14 21 in November 2021.

Archetypal Mosel Kabinett with finesse that makes it stand out in this category. Wonderful, ripe honeydew-melon and jasmine nose with a flinty touch. So much fruit and wet-stone minerality is packed into this sleek silhouette and the wine balances on the point of a needle, the delicate touch of sweetness counterpointing exactly the spring-like freshness. Drink or hold.
What is classic Mosel? It can hardly get steeper and slatier than at the Doctor site and to many Mosel aficionados no wine represents the region better than a Kabinett. Erben Thanisch’s Kabinett ticks all the boxes with a great diversity of fruit on nose and palate, none of it exaggerated, but presented with moderation and finesse. It takes a little more however to stand out from the rest, and the Doctor Kabinett manages that task with fine spices and mineral aplomb. (MS)
