The 2021 vintage was cool, rainy and late, but the 2021 Kastanienbusch Riesling GG opens surprisingly aromatic and fragrant with floral and fruity notes that are exotic and reminiscent of lychee; behind that are fine herbal notes and the unique soil from the Rotliegend period. Racy on the palate, really vital and lively, this is still a fountain of youth. On the finish, however, there is pointed, green acidity and notes of green, unripe apples with vegetal hints. In the end, this is a rather short Kastenienbusch that is characterized as much by the acidity as indeed by the stinginess of the vintage. The 2021 is a straightforward and racy Riesling without any ornamentation and, at this stage, is for purists only. Tasted at the Rebholz Kastanienbusch/Christmann Idig/Wittmann Morstein vertical tasting in Westhofen in August 2024.

Fragrant warm lemon curd and raspberry, lemon balm and citrus. A smoky spice waits in the wings. Ridiculously complex and philosophical despite its svelte shape. Revisit in 10 years’ time. (PS)
This smells like breaking open a beautifully ripe passion fruit! The palate of this great dry riesling has a very sleek silhouette, but an enormous amount of complex minerality (think every shade of rock from red to black) packed into it. Like a tight rosebud that needs time to unfurl its tightly folded beauty. From biodynamically grown grapes with Respekt certification. Drinkable now, but best from 2024.
