Score 95/100 · Drink 2023-2048, Antonio Galloni, Wine Advocate, May 2011

The estate’s 2008 Mazis-Chambertin is drop-dead gorgeous from start to finish. A dazzling, captivating bouquet melds into dark fruit, mint, flowers and sweet spices as this powerful, complex wine grows in the glass. All of the elements continue to build towards the undeniable, explosive finish. This is a hugely impressive, towering wine from Dugat-Py. Anticipated maturity: 2023-2048. Bernard Dugat farms 10 hectares of vineyards, 6.5 of which he and his family own outright. The Dugat-Py wines are breathtaking for their richness and depth. Despite their sheer concentration, the wines retain tons of vineyard and vintage character. These are some of the most viscerally thrilling, exciting wines I tasted on my recent trip through Burgundy. The only 2009 I wasn’t able to taste was the Pommard, which had been bottled just prior to my visit. Importer: Peter Weygandt, Unionville, PA; tel. (610) 486-0800

Deep red-ruby. Wild, complex but youthfully reticent aromas of black fruits, chocolate and game. Large-scaled and rich on entry, then closed in the middle, even youthfully imploded, and not currently showing the sweetness of the Lavaux. Tougher to taste today than the Charmes but there's outstanding density of material here. This too will need at least a decade in the bottle to harmonize and express itself.

(100% whole clusters; recently sulfited after the late malo) Good bright red-ruby. Wild earthy perfume of blueberry, cassis, violet and bitter chocolate. At once lush and sappy, with outstanding energy to the intense flavors of blackberry, licorice, violet and dark chocolate complicated by pepper and minerals. This really floods the palate with flavor but this wine is classically dry and quite backward. Finishes extremely long, with substantial tongue-dusting tannins and a piquant peppery quality. This, too, will require a decade or more of cellaring.

100% new oak. Mossy nose. Very opulent and round. Sweet and luscious with a slightly floral note. Real vibrancy here but for early drinking. Very complete and round. Some race and real freshness. Long. (JR)
