The 2018 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru is a little paler in colour. Soft red cherries and crushed strawberry on the open nose, possibly with a small stem addition. Lilting. The palate is medium-bodied, quite rustic and ferrous in style, but it feels dry and rather attenuated on the finish. Perhaps not a long-term prospect, but undeniably seductive right now. The 2018 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru is matured with 50% whole cluster, which Berthaut described as an experiment, as it is the first time she has used stems to impart freshness. This has a precise, peppery, undergrowth-tinged bouquet that unfurls nicely in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, the stems adding the freshness I think this Grand Cru needs, and elongating the finish. Using stems was a good move and the same has been done for the 2019.
50% whole bunch for freshness. Lower down in the Clos. They first made the wine in 2015 (Amélie's mother made it before that under the Gerbet name). Barrel sample. Fragrant with red fruit. Pretty and scented with a slight herbal note from the whole bunch. Delicate and not austere. Sweet and juicy with stony/chalky texture, not opulent at all but balanced. Perhaps not typical Clos de Vougeot. Certainly fresh. (JH)
