Tasting notes
Cask sample. Mid ruby. Red-cherry fruit with lots of perfume. Floral notes of cherry blossom and violets. Obvious charm but still quite restrained and some clear structure and tannin on the long finish.

The 2017 Vosne-Romanée Les Chaumes 1er Cru, which was de-stemmed, has a clean, precise, quite mineral-driven bouquet, not as powerful as the Aux Brûlées, yet full of energy at this stage. The palate is well balanced with firm tannin but offers plenty of vivacious red fruit laced with white pepper and bay leaf. This is very expressive and surprisingly persistent, exerting fine grip toward the finish. Jean-Nicolas Méo suggests that the vine age is now creating a more structured wine than previously, and I concur. Excellent.
The 2017 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Chaumes exhibits aromas of spicy, plummy fruit and sweet soil tones, followed by a medium-bodied, open-knit palate with moderate concentration and a saline finish. It's a touch facile this year.
The 2017 Vosne-Romanée Les Chaumes 1er Cru, which Etienne Grivot described as "a more serious wine nowadays," has a very focused, quite intense bouquet of raspberry, cranberry, sous-bois and Earl Grey aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannin, a little angular in style, but full of freshness, and quite energetic toward the finish, showing touches of blood orange on the aftertaste. Very promising.
