Drink 2033-2045, Vinfolio, Nov 2023

Jean-Marie owns just 0.26 hectares here, but the vines were planted in 1928. While many think the name comes from the French for cherry, it actually comes from “criotte” – referencing the vineyard’s chalk-accented soils. The poor soils produce a wine of exquisite delicacy – the “queen of the cellar”. The 2022 is exquisite. Lush with ripe, red-cherry fruit – it manages to combine an astonishing intensity of fruit with incredible finesse. The result is a wine that is light on its feet, pirouetting across the palate with shimmering minerality. The finish is long, sweet and perfumed. Outstanding.

An overtly floral, airy and wonderfully perfumed nose is equally spicy with its blend of red currant, soft earth and a shading of humus that is also trimmed in wood and discreet menthol hints. There is excellent verve to the beautifully well-detailed middleweight plus flavors that manage to be at once powerful yet refined, all wrapped in a lightly mineral-inflected and mildly austere finish that goes on and on. This is stunningly good; indeed it's a 'wow' wine that should, much like the Centenaire, make for breathtakingly good old bones. Don't miss! Drink 2034+

Fourrier's 2022 Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes offers up aromas of sweet, jammy cherries, berries and licorice, followed by a medium to full-bodied, fleshy and succulent palate with an ample core of pure, sun-kissed fruit.

The 2022 Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru is richer and broader than the cooler and more elegant Clos Saint-Jacques this year. Exhibiting notes of cherries, sweet plums and red berry compote mingled with licorice, petals and spices, it's full-bodied, fleshy and unctuous, with a sweet, sun-kissed core of fruit framed by powdery tannins.
