The 2008 Hermitage has pretty, almost feminine notes of strawberries, blackberries, wild flowers and pepper in its medium-bodied, elegant and fresh personality. Almost Pinot Noir-like in its aromatics and complexity, it has good concentration, integrated acidity and a clean, enjoyable finish. It should be at its best over the coming 5-7 years.

Deep ruby. Complex, high-pitched aromas of blackberry, candied licorice, minerals, violet and pipe tobacco. Juicy, stony and focused on the palate, with impressive volume and depth to its ripe dark berry and floral pastille flavors. Finishes very long, with slow-building tannins and a zesty mineral aspect. All of the Ex-Voto juice wound up in this bottling in 2008.

CS Light, honeyed nose with some promise of density. Still very young. Nothing like as exciting as Chapoutier’s, I’m afraid. Lightly floral and very supple. Round, flattering, satin texture and then a hint of bitterness on the finish. A bit vapid overall. (JR)
