Tasting notes
Bottled in July this year, the 2019 Berncasteler Doctor Riesling Kabinett is distinctively mineral on the nose that is reminiscent of dark, broken slate intertwined with a subtly intense Riesling aroma. Round and piquant on the palate, with a refined and delicate if not filigreed slate structure, this is a frisky, lush and stimulatingly salty Doctor Kabinett with remarkable finesse and elegance. Excellent. Tasted at the domain in September 2020.

The attractive, ripe white-peach, pomegranate and honeysuckle aromas are married to a light body, but this has a great, creamy and silky mouthfeel on the mid-palate that makes it stand out in the category. Very long and seriously mineral finish. Drink or hold.
One Bernkasteler Kabinett is not like another, and it’s not only the different spelling of Berncastel that sets the Doctor apart from the Badstube. Of course there is fruit, maybe even a bit more exotic with grapefruit and orange, but the true difference is a far more herbal expression on the nose, refined by a deft cool mineral nuance. Despite its modest alcohol content the texture is generous, the pithy piquancy of the citrus fruit taking the gustatory attention away from the moderate residual sugar, but the true coup de coeur is delivered by a dry flinty minerality on the finish. Not a Kabinett for quaffing. Sip and think. (MS)
