Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 Chambertin Grand Cru was showing a touch of volatile acidity on the nose, though nothing too extreme. This is certainly in the red fruit camp with crushed strawberry and kirsch-like scents, though it is missing some refinement, a bit "clunky" compared to other 2013 Chambertins. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red berry fruit, grippy in the mouth with good substance although it needs more depth on the finish. This ought to be better. Tasted September 2016.

The nose is fascinating with rose petal, lemon peel, stone and black cherry. Full-bodied and ultra-fine. It\'s seamless and goes on and on. Ethereal and refined. A true beauty. Tiny production of six barrels. Part of the vineyard is being replanted. So hard not to drink now, but better in 2018.

Mid to deep cherry red. Peppery and dark on the nose but with a hint of violets. Dry and savoury and remarkably soft on the palate. Already approachable. Velvety tannins and juicy fresh finish, without great length. (JH)
