This second wine t ends to come from the blocks in the north of the estate, where it is warmer presumably. 2017 was very tricky thanks to the fires. Some Altagracia plots were not picked before the fires and one plot has smoke taint. Half of a plot that was tainted was apparently included in the blend … … but you can’t smell it on the very sweet, concentrated nose. Slightly drying on the end. But a very charming wine, albeit with some tarriness on the finish. (JR)

This vintage has a bit less Petit Verdot than usual, but basically remains about 85% Cabernet Sauvignon with splashes of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Altagracia leaps from the glass, offering bold, expressive notes of blackberry pie, Black Forest cake and warm cassis with hints of garrigue, mossy tree bark, dusty soil and black pepper plus a fragrant waft of cinnamon stick. Medium to full-bodied, the palate offers a great core of rich, spicy black fruit preserves, framed with firm, chewy tannins and just enough freshness, finishing earthy.
About the producer
Eisele Vineyard is one of Napa’s oldest properties, first planted in the 1880s. Today owned by François Pinault of Ch. Latour, it is known for its top Cabernet Sauvignon, as well as the unique Sauvignon Blanc.
