Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru les Suchots has a sweet bouquet with crushed strawberry and kirsch, a touch of volatile acidity noticeable though it does not knock the aromatics off kilter. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannins, layers of quite extracted black cherry and mulberry fruit, quite bold and forward if missing some sophistication on the finish. Not quite firing on all cylinders for me, especially compared to its peers. Tasted September 2016.

Palish medium red. Zesty aromas of small red berries and curry powder. Juicy and penetrating in the mouth, conveying a wonderfully light touch to the delicate, detailed flavors of red raspberry, orange zest and exotic spices. Very 2013 in structure: noble more than powerful, but with no shortage of underlying density. Penetrating, energetic wine with real class. The suave tannins spread out to dust the palate on the long back end.

More sweet-fruited and toasty than the village wine, perhaps a touch stemmy. But again firm and rather drying on the palate. One of the most tannic wines I have tasted so far and I am not sure it has the fruit to come round. (JH)

Healthy medium red. Knockout nose combines redcurrant, smoky minerals, iron, flowers and fresh blood, plus a hint of prune. Dense, lush and fine-grained, but with terrific lift and sappiness to the fresh, soil-inflected flavors of redcurrant, kirsch and menthol. The vibrant, tactile finish coats the mouth with fruits and minerals and leaves the salivary glands humming.
