Dusty cherry and leather are complemented by cedar spice box and sage as the 2012 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Poggio al Vento opens in the glass. It’s silky-smooth and smoky, with dark mineral-tinged red berries and sour citrus tones cascading across the palate. Grippy tannins linger long, and although this is structured, there’s a bit of early appeal here that should make the 2012 more enjoyable sooner than later, yet still excellent over the medium term. I’m loving it today, and I feel that extra time in bottle has really brought forward a greater sense of harmony. This is an excellent effort in a warm and dry vintage.

The bouquet on the 2012 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Poggio al Vento is perfumed and truly beautiful to take in. An understated expression gradually emerges, with aromas of dusty dried florals and rich cherry sauce wafting up from the glass, and hints of cedar shaving and leather strap adding further depth. The 2012 soothes the palate with silky richness, effortlessly coasting across a core of juicy acidity, showing not a single hard edge, until saline minerals begin to drench the senses. Red licorice, roses, dried cherries, leather, earth notes and fine tannin all linger throughout the long, dramatic finish, in a display that is incredibly enjoyable and leaves you wanting another sip. The 2012 will be an amazing wine for many years to come. It is already showing beautifully today, yet also has the potential for mid-term cellaring.

Deep ruby. Lots of concentrated fruit that is a little singed on the nose. Supple and a little rich. Very long and a little dense and in need of further ageing to shed its puppy fat. (WS)

Aromas of bright red cherries and plums sit neat and pure. This has quite dense and neatly polished texture with a wealth of ripe red and black cherries pervading the finish. The tannins roll out seamlessly. Drink or hold.
