The 2015 Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaut Saint-Jacques Vieilles Vignes 1er Cru has a flamboyant bouquet with vivacious red berry fruit, camphor, sous-bois and cedar that gains intensity with aeration. The palate is beautifully balanced with fine tannins, taut and fresh, quite spicy although there are no stems in this blend. Very persistent on the finish with white pepper and clove on the aftertaste. Tasted at Domaine Duroché.

The stunning 2015 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaux Saint-Jacques Vieilles Vignes offers up a bouquet of kaleidoscopic complexity featuring aromas of cassis, cherries, rich forest floor, wood smoke, spice, peony and rose petal. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and multidimensional, with a velvety attack, superb depth, and a succulent core of tannin which entirely conceals what I suspect are considerable reserves of rich tannin. From vines planted in 1923 which never yield more than 15-18 hectoliters per hectare, this is a Lavaux Saint-Jacques which would embarrass many grands crus.
