Score 88/100 · Drink 2024-2033, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate, Mar 2023

Opening to a very lean appearance with ruby highlights, the Villa le Prata 2018 Brunello di Montalcino generally lacks intensity. There is tart cherry and wild berry at the front, and there are layers of spice and grilled herb at the back. But all of those things don't really add to the complexity we should expect from a Brunello that sees long aging and is released five years after the harvest. This vintage shows some tannic firmness at the back, but the finish is moderate in length. We should be entitled to more depth and complexity at this price point. Production is 8,000 bottles.

The 2018 Brunello di Montalcino smolders up from the glass with a dark, muddled mix of crushed rocks and dried red fruits. It’s soft textured, yet lacks dimension, showing only hints of savory spice and baked cherry. It leaves grippy tannins and hints of licorice to linger through the slightly chewy finale. This was tasted from two separate bottles with identical results.
