The 2017 Chambertin Cuvée Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru has quite a high-toned bouquet of black currant pastilles and notes of blueberry and melted tar, attractive if needing more terroir to show through at this early stage. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannin. This is a masculine, structured Chambertin, serious and rather aloof at the moment. A touch of kirsch appears toward the finish.

Due to be bottled in April, the 2017 Chambertin Grand Cru wafts from the glass with a brooding bouquet of cassis, sweet spices, grilled meats and rich soil tones. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, ample and concentrated with excellent intensity, fine-grained but abundant structuring tannins and a long finish that's still quite primary. It isn't quite as expansive and multidimensional as the domaine's Chapelle-Chambertin, but it's a very fine example of this micro-cuvée.
About the producer
Domaine Ponsot is one of the most well-known estates in the Côte de Nuits, famed for owning three of the original four hectares of the Clos de la Roche Grand Cru. The legendary domaine also produces another nine Grand Cru cuvées.
